Illness at the Riu Bachata hotel Dominican Republic

Holidaymakers have complained of vomiting, diarrhoea and severe stomach ache after staying at the Riu Bachata Hotel and they suspect this was caused as a result of eating contaminated food at the hotel.

A British couple were staying at the Riu Bachata Hotel to get married, but the bridegroom ended up in hospital for three days, including his wedding day. Other members of the wedding party, including the bride, were struck down with the sickness and some were still ill when they returned to the UK.

The bridegroom said: "When I came out of hospital I was scared to eat the food which all tasted the same anyway. There is no way it should be classed as 5 star and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy."
Comprising of Club Hotel Riu Merengue, Club Hotel Riu Bachata and Club Hotel Riu Mambo, the Riu resort has experienced problems since 2005 and many reports of food poisoning. Guests can use facilities at every one of the hotels in the group, and accommodation is provided on an all-inclusive basis.

We have recently received complaints from holidaymakers who contracted food poisoning while staying at the Hotel Barcelo in Fuerteventura.

One guest reported that both himself and his wife became ill with severe gastroenteritis during a week´s holiday at the Hotel Barcelo, Fuerteventura in early March, 2010. He suffered violent vomiting and diarrhoea for 12 hours and diarrhoea for a further 24 hours, and suspected that the sewage system at the hotel could have caused the illness and gastroenteritis.

The complainant´s wife was then struck down with the same illness three days later, and out of 7 days holiday, the couple could only enjoy 2 days illness-free. The holiday sickness was reported to a First Choice rep at the Hotel Barcelo, but the couple are still waiting to be contacted by the tour company.

Sickness Hell at Tamaimo Tropical Tenerife

Several cases of sickness have been reported at the Tamaimo Tropical Hotel in Puerto Santiago, Tenerife.

Holidaymakers have made complaints about the quality of the food and the rooms and an infestation of cockroaches at the Tamaimo Tropical.

For more information about how to make a no win no fee compensation claim phone 08000 154321 or fill in the claim form at www.roseclaims.co.uk

One guest found cockroaches crawling in the bathroom, and, after complaining to reception, was told to expect cockroaches as Tenerife was a volcanic island. The couple were then moved to another apartment, which was also crawling with the bugs.

She says: “Next day my husband went down with the sickness bug, which seemed to be affecting a lot of people in the complex, and this ruined 2 days of our holiday as we were confined to the room. I was lucky to escape the sickness bug, but many other guests were ill. We were told that a sickness outbreak had been going on for months at the hotel, and it needs to be sorted out. The hotel needs to face up to the serious issues it has.”

Another couple also suffered illness during their stay at the Tamaimo Tropical in Tenerife, and said: “After both of us eating pork for our dinner on Wednesday of the week we stayed, within a short time of returning to our room we became very ill with vomiting and diarrhoea. We reported our illness to the reps who tried to pass it off as a bug on the island. After emerging from our room two days later, we talked to many other guests who had also suffered illness after eating the same meal on the same night.”

Another group of holidaymakers booked an all-inclusive break at the Tamaimo Tropical as a birthday celebration which turned into a nightmare.

One of the party reported: “On the second day of our holiday the first member of our party was ill with diarrhoea and vomiting, promptly followed by three other members of the group. We discovered that many other guests had suffered the same fate. The virus seems to be out of control but still unsuspecting guests are arriving daily by the coach load. My advice would be – if you have booked a holiday at the Tamaimo Tropical in Lanzarote, be prepared to have your holiday ruined.”

Boudicca Cruise ship Norovirus update

After several outbreaks of Norovirus on the Boudicca cruise ship during 2009 and January 2010, several affected passengers have complained to Fred Olsen Cruise Liners and received unsatisfactory replies.

Call us free on 080001 54321 or fill in the online claim form.

Some passengers who suffered Norovirus on the Boudicca Christmas cruise to Madeira, which departed on the 22nd December, and the mini-cruise to Amsterdam on December 18th, 2009, have only just received acknowledgements of their complaints from Fred Olsen, and others have been fobbed off altogether.

Derisory offers of vouchers have been made to other passengers who suffered sickness and food poisoning on the Boudicca cruise ship, eventhough the vessel was hit with three outbreaks of Norovirus in as many weeks, and a total of 519 passengers were taken ill.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines claimed the Boudicca was deep-cleaned following the first outbreak of Norovirus, but many more passengers were taken ill on subsequent cruises.

During the Boudicca cruise which left Portsmouth on December 6th, 2009, 180 out of 800 passengers were taken ill. Fred Olsen claimed the Boudicca was deep-cleaned when it returned to Portsmouth on the 18th December, a day early, although it left port for a four day mini-cruise to Amsterdam later the same day and another 50 passengers were diagnosed with Norovirus.

Fred Olsen claims the Boudicca was again, deep-cleaned after the mini-cruise to Amsterdam, and the ship set sail again for Madeira on the 22nd December, 2009. During the Boudicca Christmas cruise, 289 out of 795 passengers were diagnosed with Norovirus and gastroenteritis, and the ship returned to Portsmouth a day early.

The latest outbreak of Norovirus on board the Boudicca was the seventh time one of the Fred Olsen fleet has been hit by food poisoning during the past 12 months, and there was another outbreak in October, 2009.

Despite assurances from Fred Olsen that the Boudicca had been deep-cleaned between cruises in December, 2009, passengers who suffered Norovirus claimed there was not sufficient time for the ship to be properly cleaned, and that Fred Olsen were responsible for subsequent outbreaks of the virus.

If you have suffered sickness, Norovirus or food poisoning on board the Fred Olen Boudicca Cruise Ship, contact Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors, who can help you claim the compensation you are entitled to.

Don´t accept any offer of compensation from Fred Olsen until you have spoken to us, as you could be entitled to a lot more. We specialise in holiday illness and injury compensation claims, and we are experts in travel law. Cut out the middle man and come directly to us for a free and quick assessment of your claim. We work on a no win no fee basis so you get 100% of the compensation. Call us free on 080001 54321 or fill in the online claim form.

The facts about Norovirus and cruise ship illness

Norwalk Virus and Norovirus are often mentioned in the same breath as ´cruise ship illness´, and reports show that more than 2% of all cruise ship passengers become ill with some type of gastroenteritis or ´stomach flu´ during their holiday.

Norovirus symptoms can last between 1 and 4 days, and can totally ruin the holiday. Passengers can become very ill very quickly and symptoms usually include: stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Some people also have a fever and others report muscle aching. There are ways of avoiding the disease.

What is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a group of viruses that cause the ´stomach-flu´ or gastroenteritis, and the virus has nothing to do with the flu virus. Passengers should be aware that a flu injection will not prevent Norovirus, and the symptoms can come on very quickly. Norovirus may be referred to as food poisoning, but it is not always transmitted in food, and likewise, some types of food poisoning have nothing to do with the Norovirus bug. The symptoms come on suddenly, and it is unlikely to have long-term health effects.

Originally named after Norwalk, Ohio, where there was an outbreak of the virus in the 1970´s, Norovirus can affect thousands of cruise ship passengers each year. The disease spreads quickly through confined areas, and passengers often have to be confined to their cabins to prevent the virus spreading.

How do people contract Norovirus?

Norovirus can be contracted by:

• Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with Norovirus

• Touching surfaces or objects that are contaminated with Norovirus, and placing their hand in their mouth

• Having direct contact with a person who is infected and showing symptoms of the disease

Norovirus is very contagious and can spread rapidly throughout cruise ships. The virus has many different strains which make it difficult for a person´s body to develop a long-lasting immunity, and Norovirus can recur in a person´s lifetime. Due to genetic factors, some people are more likely to become infected and develop serious illness than others.

When do symptoms of Norovirus appear?

Symptoms of Norwalk Virus or Norovirus normally begin about 24 to 48 hours after exposure, but they can appear 12 hours after ingestion. People who have contracted either virus are contagious from the minute they start feeling ill until at least three days after recovery. Some people are contagious for up to two weeks after they have recovered from symptoms. If you have recently recovered from Norwalk Virus or Norovirus it is very important to wash your hands often and thoroughly to prevent further spread of the disease.

What is the treatment for Norovirus?

Norovirus is not bacterial and antibiotics are not effective in treating it. Unfortunately there is no anti-viral medication that works against the Norwalk Virus, and there is currently no vaccine to prevent it. If you are vomiting or have diarrhoea, you should drink plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration, which can cause serious illness if it is not dealt with.
Can I prevent Norovirus infection?

You can lessen the chance of coming into contact with Norwalk Virus or Norovirus on a cruise ship by:

• Frequently washing your hands, especially after using the toilet, changing nappies and before eating or preparing food.

• Use a strong, beach-based cleanser to thoroughly clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces immediately after an illness.

• Remove and wash clothing or bedclothes that may be contaminated with the virus after an illness episode.

• Keep the area surrounding the toilet disinfected and clean and make sure there is no vomit or stool left in the bowl.

You should not let the fear of contracting Norovirus prevent you from booking a cruise ship holiday, but you should be aware of the risks.

If you have suffered Norovirus, gastroenteritis or any other illness onboard a cruise ship, you may be able to claim compensation. Possible food poisoning outbreak at Los Gigantes Hotel Tenerife

Holidaymakers are complaining of sickness , gastroenteritis and possibly food poisoning at the 225-bed Los Gigantes Hotel in Tenerife.

Very high numbers of guests have been suffering from violent diarrhoea, projectile vomiting and severe stomach cramps which have ruined their holiday at the Los Gigantes. All guests have suggested that the illness outbreak at the Los Gigantes was caused by food poisoning at the hotel in Tenerife.

If the illness is proved to have originated at the hotel Los Gigantes, then holidaymakers could be entitled to substantial compensation for loss of enjoyment of their holiday and medical expenses plus other costs.

When large numbers of people are complaining of sickness in the same hotel at the same time, then there is obviously something very wrong. One holidaymaker is reported to have been taken directly from the hotel to hospital by ambulance where he spent four days on an intravenous drip and was fed antibiotics.

Food poisoning can be avoided, including salmonella, if food is cooked properly.
If you have stayed at the Los Gigantes Hotel and suffered illness, including food poisoning and gastroenteritis, you can claim compensation with Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors, who specialise in holiday accident and illness compensation. We are experts in travel law, and if it is proved that food poisoning has transpired at the Los Gigantes Hotel due to negligence and failings in food hygiene practices, you could claim substantial compensation. A luxury cruise liner has been hit by three outbreaks of Norovirus in as many weeks. A total of 519 passengers have been taken ill with the virus during three cruises on the Boudicca over winter, despite assurances from the owners who insisted the ship was free from virus.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines said the vessel was twice deep-cleaned, following outbreaks of Norovirus, but the virus has returned with a vengeance to plague more passengers, at least twice.

Three people also died during Boudicca´s last cruise, although the company said the deaths were unrelated to the virus.

Derek and Marina Eaton contracted the virus on the last cruise and were confined to their cabins. After being taken ill, having booked the ship´s most expensive suite for the 14 night Christmas cruise to Madeira and the Canaries, at £10,155, Mr Eaton, 70, described it as a ´cruise from hell.´
During the initial 12-day cruise to the Canaries, which departed from Portsmouth on December 6, 180 of the 800 passengers aboard the Boudicca were struck down with illness.

The firm said that when the 28,000-ton ship returned to Portsmouth on December 18, it was deep-cleaned and was free from the virus. Later that day, it departed on a four-day mini-cruise to Amsterdam and around 50 of the 827 passengers were then diagnosed with the stomach bug.
When the Boudicca returned, the company vowed to thoroughly clean the ship before the next cruise, which was the one Mr and Mrs Eaton were on, which departed for Madeira on December 22nd.

This time, 289 of the 795 passengers were diagnosed with Norovirus and gastroenteritis, and the ship - which can carry up to 900 passengers - returned to Portsmouth a day early.
Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has blamed infected passengers for bringing the virus aboard.
The latest outbreak would be the seventh time in the past year that one of firm's fleet has been hit by the illness.

There was another outbreak on the Boudicca in October.
Mr Eaton, 75, a company owner, from Woburn Sands in Bedfordshire, said he and his wife had been looking forward to spending New Year's Eve in Madeira to see the island's fireworks display, which is said to be the largest in the world.

But after falling ill, they spent the night confined to their cabin and missed the display. They had to spend a total of four days in their cabin and missed three of the six islands on the cruise. Mr Eaton said: 'The management of the company should have cancelled the cruise once the first set of passengers fell ill.

'I don't believe for one second that they deep-cleaned the ship because there wasn't sufficient time.'Noroviruses - a group of viruses - are the most common cause of gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhoea) and affect up to one million in Britain every year. A company spokesman said it would refund passengers a day´s travel as the ship returned a day early and it also offered each passenger £100 for the inconvenience.

But there has not been any compensation paid for days lost due to sickness.
'Throughout every cruise great attention is paid on a daily basis to the hygiene and cleanliness of the vessel,' said a company spokesperson. At the end of each cruise where there were a number of gastro cases, a programme of deep cleaning and disinfection was carried out, with subsequent departures delayed as necessary.'

More than 250 passengers on another Fred Olsen vessel - the Balmoral - have also fallen ill with Norovirus. The ship left Dover for the Canary Islands on December 21 with 1,350 passengers. A spokesman said it would be deep-cleaned in one day. There were also outbreaks of Norovirus on the Balmoral last February when 200 fell ill and in September when 78 caught the virus.

Gastroenteritis and Norovirus on Fred Olsen cruise ship Boudicca

Cruise ship illness

A cruise ship holiday to the Canary Islands has been ruined after hundreds of passengers were struck down with gastroenteritis on board the Boudicca Cruise Ship.

The ship had set sail from Portsmouth headed towards Gran Canaria, but was forced to return to Britain after the outbreak of the bug, which caused severe vomiting and diarrhoea among many passengers.

One passenger commented: “Just got off the Boudicca this morning with a sick wife suffering from Norovirus. We thought we had got away with not contracting the illness which we understand has affected 40% of the passengers and 10% of the crew but when my wife woke up this morning she suddenly felt very ill. What a journey home!!

There must be a serious problem with this ship as this is the second outbreak in as many months, either the ship is dirty or members of the crew are carrying this bug. This really has been the cruise from hell.”

Operator Fred Olsen Cruises vowed to give the Boudicca, a deep clean, before it sets off again, but this will not help the passengers already affected.

A spokesperson for the cruise company said: "Prior to the ship embarking on her next cruise, a thorough cleaning and disinfecting of the vessel will be undertaken, so her departure will be slightly delayed."

They also emphasised the "fastidious hygiene and disinfecting regime" which Fred Olsen Cruises operates.

Last month, a study by Boston Medical School found that on average only one in three toilets on cruise ships are disinfected daily.

Would you be put off going on a cruise by the possibility that there could be an illness lurking on board, or have you suffered a cruise ship illness and not sought compensation? If so, we want to hear from you.

if you suffered gastroenteritis or Norovirus on board the Boudicca Cruise Ship or on any other Cruise Ship during the past two years, we can help you get compensation. Facts about holiday food poisoning

Egypt, and other holiday destinations around the world, including the Dominican Republic, Turkey and Spain have seen an increase in food poisoning cases over the past 2 years. Egypt attracts thousands of holiday makers each year who are looking for a holiday with great weather, ancient treasures, such as the pyramids and tombs, combined with modern facilities and amenities.

However, holidays to Egypt don´t always go as planned, and there has recently been an increase in food poisoning cases at holiday hotels. You may have become ill due to food poisoning or poor hygiene standards, or as a result of a dirty swimming pool. You could also have suffered an accident in the hotel which was caused by negligence on the part of the hotel management or the holiday tour company.

Never be fobbed off by tour operator´s claims that food poisoning is caused by an airborne virus or bug. It is caused by a bacterial infection. All- inclusive hotels have also seen an increase in the cases of food poisoning, when food is often left out at room temperature for too long or is not covered.

The last thing anyone wants on holiday is food poisoning. Anyone who has suffered this gastric illness, especially when they have been on holiday with children, will know how horrible it can be. Food poisoning will ruin your holiday and leave you out of pocket, so you should always seek legal advice from a specialist personal injury solicitor when you return to the UK and get the all clear from your GP.

Common food poisoning symptoms which can be picked up on holiday include: Diarrhoea, Nausea and Vomiting, which can lead to serious conditions such as Reactive Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Common types of Food Poisoning Illnesses include:
Salmonella

Salmonella is caused by unclean food, particularly from holiday hotel kitchens and restaurants, excretions from infected people or animals and polluted surface water (including unused water dispensers). Poultry that is not properly thawed is also a major source of Salmonella poisoning as the melt water contains bacteria.

E.coli

E.coli is associated with eating unwashed fruit and vegetables or meat that has been contaminated after slaughter.

Shigella

Shigella is typically contracted via ingestion (faecal-oral contamination).

Typhoid

Typhoid is caused by the bacterium, Salmonella enterica serovar typhi, and it is passed on by the ingestion of food or water contaminated with faeces from an infected person. Typhoid doesn´t affect animals, so transmission is only from human to human. Typhoid can also only be spread in environments where human faeces or urine come into contact with food or drinking water.

Amoebic Dysentery

Amoebic Dysentery is normally transmitted by the faecal-oral route, but can be transmitted indirectly through contact with dirty hands or objects touched by an infected person. Often confused with Traveller´s Diarrhoea, Amoebic Dysentery is most prevalent in developing nations.

Giardia Lamblia

Giardia Lamblia often occurs through ingestion of contaminated water or food, or by the faecal-oral route, through poor hygiene practices. The Giardia cyst can survive for months in warm water and can be found in contaminated wells or water systems. It is also prevalent in stagnant water pools, such as ponds or storm water storage systems. Faecal-oral transmission can also occur, particularly in children´s holiday clubs, where children may have poor hygiene practices. Giardia affects humans, and is also common among cats, dogs and birds.

Campylobacter

Common ways to contract Campylobacter are through the faecal-oral route, person to person, through sexual contact, ingestion of contaminated food or water and eating raw meat.

Norovirus

Norovirus is transmitted directly via person to person or indirectly via contaminated water and food. The source of waterborne outbreaks can include dirty swimming pool water, unhygienic tap water and dirty wells, plus ice machines. Shellfish and salads are the foods most often linked with Norwalk outbreaks, and the ingestion of raw oysters also poses a high risk of infection. Food handlers who are carrying the virus can also contaminate food.

Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is usually transmitted by the faecal-oral route via contaminated food or drinking water. The disease is most prevalent in developing countries and in regions with poor hygiene standards.

Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium infection is passed on through contaminated substances such as water, uncooked or cross-contaminated food which has been in contact with the faeces of an infected individual or animal. Other sources include untreated drinking water supplies.

Gastroenteritis

Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, and at least half of all cases are caused by Norovirus. Different species of bacteria cause gastroenteritis, including E.coli, Shigella and Salmonella. Sources commonly include badly-prepared food, re-heated meat dishes, seafood, dairy and bakery products. Holidaymakers are particularly at risk if they consume improperly prepared food or contaminated water.

If you have suffered food poisoning or any other type of holiday illness, which was caused by the negligence of someone else, you can claim compensation for loss of enjoyment of your holiday and medical expenses. Guests are complaining that their holidays have been ruined after outbreaks of illness which included symptoms of violent diarrhoea and vomiting.

The Holiday Village hotels in Benalmadena and Majorca operate on an all-inclusive basis, where guests share the same facilities and meal arrangements. This indicates that the source of infection possibly lies within the hotel, as few guests venture out for meals.People who have become ill while staying at the Holiday Village in Benalmadena, on Spain´s Costa del Sol, include many young children. If the outbreak of illness is found to be linked to the food or the hygiene of the swimming pool, clients may be able to claim compensation. The Holiday Village in Benalmadena has 360 rooms.Holiday illness at the Kuredu Island Hotel Maldives

Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors have recently received reports that holidaymakers at the Kuredu Island Hotel, Lhaviyani Atoll, in the Maldives were struck down by illness while staying at the resort. A widespread sickness bug causing gastric illness was said to sweep through the Kuredu Island Hotel, which resulted in diarrhoea and severe vomiting. Food poisoning, Norovirus and Salmonella has not been ruled out, although it is too early to confirm this. If food poisoning is proven as the cause of the sickness outbreak at the Kuredu Island Hotel, affected holidaymakers could be entitled to substantial compensation. The hotel has 330 rooms.
Illness outbreak at Majorca Holiday Village

Reports of holiday illness have also been made by holidaymakers who stayed at the Holiday Village in C´an Picafort, Majorca during August and September, 2009. Major health scare at the Holiday Village Turkey

Salmonella, Cryptosporidium, Campylobacter and Severe gastroenteritis struck down holidaymakers this summer at the Holiday Village, Sarigerme, Turkey, which is exclusive to First Choice for UK customers.

For more information how to make a no win no fee no obligation compensation claims phone 08000 154321 or click here for www.roseclaims.co.uk

BBC´s Watchdog programme last night highlighted the pain and suffering of holidaymakers who stayed at the Holiday Village, Sarigerme, on the south-west coast of Turkey, which has been linked to cases of food poisoning and holiday illness since 2005.

Victoria Shaw, 11, caught Salmonella, and her dad, Mark was taken ill with campylobacter, which is an intestinal illness often caused by undercooked meat or cross-contamination of food. Mark says he was so ill that he went to the toilet 37 times in a day, and he couldn´t climb the stairs.Watchdog sent undercover researchers to the Holiday Village, Sarigerme, Turkey, who found the hotel to be clean, but also heard about many more cases of illness at the resort, including severe diaereses and vomiting.

Out of a group of 21 holidaymakers from Manchester, 13 became sick while staying at the hotel, and four more developed symptoms when they returned home. One rep at the hotel suggested an unfamiliar diet was causing illness amongst guests and said: “You find the food is very oily, in comparison to the UK where it´s salty. But there´s no sort of disease or bug or anything.”
Once back in the UK, two of the affected party took stool samples to their doctor, and one tested positive for Cryptosporidium, a waterborne parasite that affects the stomach and intestine.

A spokesman for First Choice, whose company admitted liability for claims against the Holiday Village, Sarigerme, Turkey, in 2005, 2006 and 2007, said: “At First Choice, the health and well being of our customers is our primary focus and we would like to apologise to anyone who has experienced sickness whilst staying at the Holiday Village, Turkey.“The Holiday Village, Turkey, is one of the biggest and most popular resorts in our programme, with nearly 48,000 customers visiting each year. Whilst we accept than any level of sickness is unacceptable, the numbers of holidaymakers falling sick remains very low when the larger population is taken into consideration.

We closely monitor all the hotels in which we operate with a view to ensuring that the strictest health and hygiene standards are maintained. In light of the reported issues at this resort, we can confirm that we have significantly increased our checks. We have commissioned independent consultants who have undertaken three additional rigorous audits during the summer. On each occasion their reports have rated quality standards to be high, and well above the inspector´s requirements. These studies are in addition to our own audits, as well as those conducted by other hygiene specialists instructed by the hotel management.”

If you have suffered any type of illness at the Holiday Village, Sarigerme, Turkey, including food poisoning, sickness or diarrhoea, Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors can help you claim compensation immediately. We are experts in holiday illness and accident compensation claims, and our professional team will guide you through the compensation claims process. At Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors we specialise in travel law and we work on a no win no fee basis so 100% of the compensation goes to you. Hell´s Kitchen

Food poisoning can be fatal

Food poisoning in the UK is increasing. The number of cases of Salmonella has remained high in the past few years, and Campylobacter cases have doubled.
Better training of food handlers needs to take place, and better care must be taken to ensure food is kept at the proper temperatures. Cross contamination is also a big problem which needs to be addressed.

For more information how to make a no win no fee no obligation compensation claims phone 08000 154321 or click here for www.roseclaims.co.uk

Bacillus cereus

This is a spore forming bacteria which is often found in rice from take-away restaurants. Symptoms of Bacillus cereus include diarrhoea and abdominal cramps between 6-15 hours after consumption of contaminated food. Nausea may occur and symptoms usually last 24 hours.

Source of Bacillus cereus

You can contract the disease from meat, milk, vegetables and fish, but outbreaks have normally been associated with rice, potato, pasta and cheese products. Sauces, puddings, soups, casseroles, pastries and salads can also be contaminated.

Campylobacter

Campylobacter is a group of spiral-shaped bacteria that can cause disease in humans and animals. Most human illness is caused by Campylobacter jejuni. Birds carry this illness without becoming ill themselves. Proper cooking, milk pasteurising and chlorination of water will all kill bacteria. This is the most common cause of acute bacterial diarrhoea in the UK. Symptoms include diarrhoea, cramping, abdominal pain and fever within 2-5 days after exposure, and can include nausea and vomiting.

Sources of Campylobacter

Raw or undercooked meat and poultry, offal, contaminated water or milk. Contamination is usually from excreta of birds, cattle and family pets. 40,000 cases are reported annually in the UK.

Clostridium perfringens

This is distributed throughout the environment and is normally found in human and animal intestines. The illness is caused by bacteria releasing toxins in the digestive canal. Symptoms include intense abdominal cramps and diarrhoea, and usually lasts less than 24 hours. It can last up to two weeks in severe cases. The illness can be mistaken with 24-hour flu.

Food sources

Meat, meat products and gravy are usually implicated with food poisoning caused by clostridium perfringens. The young and the elderly are most at risk.

Clostridium botulinum

Clostridium botulinum causes severe food poisoning, and is caused by the ingestion of foods containing the neurotoxin formed from bacteria. The illness is rare but can be fatal and can be destroyed by heating at 80ºC for at least 10 minutes. Symptoms can show up 4 hours to 8 days after ingestion, and include weakness, vertigo, double vision, difficulty in speaking, swallowing and breathing, muscle weakness and constipation. Paralysis and death can follow between 18 and 36 hours later if untreated.

Food source

Incriminated foods include: tinned or vacuum-packed food.

Cryptosporidium parvum

Members of this family are parasites from the intestinal tracts of fish, reptiles, birds and mammals. Cryptosporidium is passed in the faeces and is common in drinking water which originated from drainage of agricultural land. Symptoms usually include short term diarrhoea unless you suffer from a compromised immune system which can make the illness more severe.

Escherichia coli (E coli)

Normally found in animal and human intestines, E coli can be serious. One group of bacteria cause severe infantile diarrhoea and another cause traveller´s diarrhoea. Food sources include undercooked minced beef and unpasteurised milk. The elderly or very young can develop anaemia and renal failure. Symptoms include abdominal pain, fever, diarrhoea and vomiting and normally show between 10 and 72 hours after ingestion and last between 1 and 5 days.

Avoid E.coli

Ensure all meat is cooked thoroughly and juices run clear when spiked. Always avoid unpasteurised milk and separate raw and cooked foods to prevent cross contamination. Disinfect all surfaces and utensils used for food preparation. Wash hands regularly and always use a disinfectant hand wash.

Food source

Foods often incriminated include soft cheese, but the main contamination comes from food handlers.

Giardia lamblia

Giardia lamblia is a parasite which exists in two forms and lives in the small intestine, and is passed through faeces. Symptoms include severe diarrhoea from contaminated food or water.

Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne illness which is often transmitted to ready-to-eat foods, and is widely found in sewage and decaying vegetable matter. To avoid listeria always wash salads before use, never eat chilled products after the sell by date, and ensure your fridge is kept at the correct temperature. The onset of symptoms is normally 8 days to 3 months, and they include nausea, vomiting and diaereses. Meningitis and blood poisoning can occur in pregnant women. Antibiotic treatment is effective.

Food source

Foods known to cause listeria include: salads, sandwiches, paté, cooked meat and ready meals. Other suspected foods include milk, ice cream, raw and smoked fish and soft cheese.

Salmonella

Salmonella is found in animals, including poultry and pigs and environmental sources include water, soil, insects, kitchen surfaces, animal faeces, raw meats and raw seafood. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, fever and headache and normally start 6 to 48 hours after infection.

Shigella

Shigella is found in the intestine of man and other animals, and is also known as bacillary dysentery. Symptoms include diarrhoea, fever, vomiting and abdominal pain and can start 12 hours to 2 days after infection. Foods incriminated include salads, raw vegetables, milk and dairy products, poultry and contaminated water.

Norwalk Virus

Norwalk Virus is an intestinal infection which occurs in outbreaks and is normally associated with shellfish. The virus is passed in the stool of infected persons and people get infected by swallowing stool-contaminated food or water. Other sources of infection include salads, eggs, ice and ready to eat foods. Norwalk is more common in adults and older children and symptoms normally appear within 10 days. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach
cramps.

Anyone can get Norwalk virus infection, but it may be more common in adults and older children. Illness normally lasts 24 to 60 hours.

David, who works for TMD in Hartlepool, and Judith, a medical receptionist, spent £2,000 on the holiday of a lifetime in May, and quickly fell ill with stomach pains.

The couple are now taking action against Tour Operators, Thomas Cook.
Said David: “It was an absolute nightmare, and the holiday was totally ruined.

“I had never been to Egypt before and based on this experience, I won´t be going back.”

He also added: “My symptoms were so bad they left me dehydrated and I had to get an injection from the on-site clinic.
“We were both stuck at the hotel, and watching other people falling ill around us.”

It is claimed that undercooked food caused the food poisoning outbreak.A spokesman for Thomas Cook UK and Ireland said: “We take all reports of illness very seriously so we were very concerned to hear that Mr and Mrs Harle became unwell whilst they were on holiday.

“As a priority we are undertaking a full investigation with the hotel and our resort team and are liaising with the solicitor representing the couple.”

Viven Hingley, fiancé Stephen Woodcock and their three children jetted off for a dream holiday to the Holiday Village in Turkey on 22nd June.

By the second week, holiday illness had affected Stephen, 43, Caris 14, Aiden 13 and Alisha, 8.The family soon discovered that other people at the same hotel had the same symptoms, and salmonella poisoning was suspected.

Viven, 42 said: “It was strange because the hotel was lovely. There were inspectors always checking around and the place looked spotless.“The only thing my children noticed was food left uncovered and people tipping fresh food over the leftover food rather than using fresh dishes.“Then in the second week my daughter started to feel off-colour, had a sore throat and felt lethargic.“Then my other daughter, son and fiancé got it and we were also rushing to the toilet with diarrhoea, feeling dizzy and had terrible stomach pains. It was a nightmare.”

When the family returned home they contacted a holiday illness solicitor specialising in travel law, and cases of salmonella were reported at the same hotel from as far back as 2005.

A spokesman for First Choice, the tour operator responsible for sending people to the hotel said: “At First Choice the health and safety of our customers is our primary focus.

“We closely monitor all the hotels which we operate to ensure the strictest health, safety, hygiene and comfort levels are maintained.”Vivien said: “I would advise people to be careful and to do some research before going to this hotel. It needs to be closed down and cleaned properly.”

Karen Morrisroe-Clutton, 32, and a vegetarian, had to be placed in a medically-induced coma after contracting a serious strain of the infection.A three-year-old girl is also being treated for renal failure at Alder Hey children's hospital in Liverpool, after contracting E.coli 0157.

Two other people have been diagnosed with E.coli but not admitted to hospital, and the outbreak is being linked to a takeaway restaurant in the village of Llay near Wrexham.

Paul Clutton, husband of Karen, said she had eaten a vegetarian burger from Ali´s Takeaway in Llay a week before falling ill.

Mrs Morrisroe-Clutton´s mother, Rose said: “Karen´s health has improved slightly but she is not out of danger yet.”

An official closure notice was put on the door of the small takeaway shop which read that the business had been “implicated in an outbreak of food poisoning.”

Mrs Morrisroe-Clutton developed diarrhoea, sickness and then began passing blood, which turned out to be the most virulent form of E.coli 0157.

She was immediately admitted to hospital suffering dehydration, followed by seizures. Her breathing stopped temporarily. After a marginal improvement, the sedation was lightened on Saturday.

Said Mr Clutton: "I said something to her and she opened her eyes and tried to respond, which the doctors said was a good sign.

Marco Polo cruise ship passengers must take advice

Victims of the Marco Polo Cruise ship sickness outbreak have been urged to take professional advice before accepting any payout from the cruise ship operator.

Experts in travel law have advised passengers who were ill onboard the Marco Polo, where an outbreak of Norovirus occurred, just two days into the cruise, to think very carefully before accepting any offer of a refund from the tour operator, Transocean Tours. Passengers could be entitled to a much more than the £2,000 per person refund which is being offered, plus any money spent onboard the ship for food, drink and medical expenses.

The Marco Polo had to dock at Cromarty Firth just 48 hours after the cruise had set off, and passengers could sue the tour operator for loss of enjoyment of the holiday, discomfort, pain and medical expenses. Passengers who suffered norovirus onboard the Marco Polo Cruise Ship are advised to contact a personal injury solicitor who specialises in holiday illness compensation to assess their claim.

Said Richard Farnworth of Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors: “At first glance it may have seemed an attractive offer for passengers to get their money back from Transocean Tours, but the passengers could be entitled to higher sums of compensation for the suffering caused on board the ship. Some passengers may even go on to suffer long term illness as a result of the outbreak of Norovirus on the Marco Polo, which means they have been under compensated from the tour operator.

“Every passenger affected on The Marco Polo Cruise Ship should seek legal help and advice before accepting the offer from Transocean Tours. Once they have accepted it, they won´t be able to make any further claim for which they may be entitled.”The Marco Polo returned to port in Tilbury, Essex, where the remaining passengers were offered a refund as a gesture of goodwill from the cruise operators.

Britain´s Port authorities have started screening incoming passengers for the first time, as the NHS intensive care services have been swamped with a huge rise in swine flu cases.
Demand for critical care beds is expected to outstrip the numbers available by 130%, particularly in units designed to treat children.Over 160 British citizens have been held in quarantine in China, Singapore, India and Egypt after swine flu fears. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have also said it is likely that others will be held in quarantine over suspicions that they have the H1N1 virus.

Breaking news about swine flu includes:

• Health workers and immigration officials at UK airports and other port authorities have been instructed to be on the look-out for passengers with flu symptoms which could be swine flu infection.

• A 26-year old pregnant woman from Scotland was “gravely ill” after suffering a severe infection, and is now in Sweden receiving specialist blood treatment.

• Sainsbury´s have opted-out of distributing antiviral medication as part of the national service in its stores, after fears that swine-flu sufferers would spread the disease in the shops.

• The Swine Flu Hotline and an advertising campaign has just begun and will advertise the National Pandemic Flu Service. The campaign has cost £2.5 million to set up.

• Last week the number of flu infections doubled in Britain with an estimated 100,000 people falling victim to Swine Flu.

• Hospitals on the South East coast, the South West, East of England and East Midlands are likely to become “quickly exhausted” if cases continue to rise throughout winter as expected.

• The World Health Organisation announced that people in 160 countries are now affected by Swine Flu, and has predicted that there are likely to be 2 billion cases globally during the pandemic.

If you think you have been exposed to Swine Flu on holiday, and have not been given accurate information about the risk from your tour operator, you may be able to claim compensation for medical expenses and lack of enjoyment of your holiday. Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors can help you get the compensation you deserve.

Holiday Headaches and holiday illness

Headaches are no joke. They involve mild to severe pain, in one or more parts of the head and neck. Most headaches are mild, but cause irritation amongst sufferers. Severe headaches need to be treated with drugs and possibly life-style changes.

For more information how to make a no win no fee no obligation compensation claims phone 08000 154321 or click here for www.roseclaims.co.uk

What causes headaches?

There is no single cause of headaches, but a number of causes have been identified and fall into two main categories. These are:

Tension headache

Tension headaches result from the contraction of head and neck muscles, and account for more than 70% of all headaches. Headaches occur in people of either sex and at any age but are most common in adults and teenagers. Tension headaches usually occur as a result of stress, fatigue, poor posture, eye strain, and too much tobacco and alcohol. Women are also prone to tension headaches before and after a menstrual period.

Migraine headache

Migraine is the cause of 20% all headaches. This type of headache occurs when blood vessels in the head and neck constrict, and result in a decrease of blood flow in the head. Migraine can cause severe pain on one side of the head, causing sufferers to feel sick and sensitive to light and sound. Chronic migraine affects more men than women. Factors associated with migraine headache are prolonged muscle tension and stress, a family history of migraine, excessive alcohol use, smoking, a lack of sleep and the use of oral contraceptives. Certain foods including chocolate, nuts and cheese, red wine and smoked fish, plus food containing artificial sweeteners can all contribute to migraine headaches. Migraine headache can last from few hours to a few days.

Migraine headache - when should you consult a doctor?

Most headaches can be cured by over-the-counter pain relief tablets, or a good night´s sleep. If you suffer chronic headaches, however, you should seek the advice of your GP, who will discuss possible causes and prevention with you. You should contact your doctor immediately if your headache is accompanied by nausea and vomiting, loss of memory, tiredness, a high fever, a stiff neck, convulsions, vision disturbances, loss of balance, loss of feeling in your arms and legs and difficulty communicating.

If you have suffered headaches after a fall or accident on holiday, you may be able to claim compensation when you return to the UK if the accident was not your fault. If you think you have a claim, contact a personal injury solicitor who specialises in holiday accident and illness claims to see if you are eligible to make a claim for compensation. Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors can help. We work on a no win no fee basis and we specialise in holiday accident and injury compensation claims.

How does the doctor make a diagnosis?

If you suffer severe headaches or migraine headaches, your doctor will ask you about your family medical history and also assess your diet and lifestyle, and decide whether to carry out further more detailed tests, including possible head scans (CT scan), an X-ray on the head, a temporal artery biopsy or even a lumbar puncture by a specialist.

What kind of treatment is available for a migraine headache?

If you suffer regular severe headaches, your doctor will decide what treatment to administer. Keep a note of the dates and times of headaches over a period of 3 months. Note when the pain started and how long it lasted, whether you had eaten or drunk anything just previously to the headache starting and whether you were taking any particular medicines before the onset of the headache. Also note weather conditions and, if you are a woman, how close to your menstrual cycle you are when the headaches are at their worse. By process of elimination you may be able to avoid certain foods/medicines which cause the headaches. For milder headaches, paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen are usually effective for pain relief. Prescription medicines are more effective for chronic migraines and severe headaches. Some over-the-counter medicines for migraine also contain anti-sickness drugs.

Your doctor may prescribe a preventive treatment if migraine attacks are especially frequent. Aspirin should not be given to children under 16 years of age, unless on the advice of a doctor. The above mentioned medicines should never be given to children unless you are advised to do so by your GP.

If you suffer from headaches what can you do to help yourself?

If you suffer from regular headaches:

• Avoid excessive use of alcohol and tobacco.

• Always consider your posture while sitting and working. The type of chair you use is important, and should be one that maximises comfort and good posture, and should be adjusted to a comfortable position that supports you.

• Perform regular relaxation techniques.

• Take plenty of fresh air and regular exercise.

• Many people find that taking natural herbal treatments is very effective at reducing or preventing headaches. Most herbal treatments and remedies needs to be taken daily – even if no headache is present – to have an effect. For migraine headaches, symptoms can be reduced by:

• Relaxing in a quiet room with the lights turned off.

• Avoiding food or drink in your diet that have been identified as having possible factors associated with migraine headaches, and avoiding noisy environments and loud music.Holiday illness abroad can be a nightmare. If you have suffered a holiday illness or accident that was not your fault, contact Farnworth Rose Personal Injury Solicitors when you return to the UK.
