Firefighter awarded £28,000 after holiday fall

 
A firefighter has been awarded £28,000 after being injured on a holiday in Spain, which led to his early retirement.

The 53 year old man from the Swansea area was injured when the camp bed he was sleeping on collapsed, and although he had earlier complained about the bed, the hotel staff had failed to replace it. Swansea Crown Court said that holiday company, Thomson, had failed to exercise ´reasonable care and skill´ in this case. The Fire Brigades´ Union backed the injured fire fighter to fight his case for compensation.
When he was shown to his cramped room in a hotel on the Costa Dorada, with a camp bed wedged between two single beds, the claimant complained that the middle bed was too small for him to sleep on. He suffered injuries when the bed collapsed from under him as he was trying to get up. The injuries worsened when he arrived home, and he had to take several months off work.

Avoidable accident

Thomson argued that it should not be held liable for the claimant's injuries, but were over ruled by the judge. The claimant said he was pleased the case was over, but added that the accident could have been avoided. ´I couldn't understand why the hotel didn't listen when I complained´ he said. ´I was so angry as the accident was completely avoidable. I struggled on at work, taking painkillers and going to see chiropractors and osteopaths, but in the end I had to finish work. It was too much.´
Following the accident, Thomson did not want to comment on the matter.
